would be cool if you also showed the frames when converting directly to ProRes.

i think you can now edit directly on cineform in Final Cut.
Works really nicely with FirstLight. Ho yes I upgraded my neoscene to neo HD. you can grade the footage even while with final cut open, from first light, and it instantly updates it.
Here's my test. note I was shooting with a sign ray gold blue filter.

Good blog post, but I'll add one update. The reason you stated for transcoding from CineForm to ProRes (performance) was valid at the time of the blog post. But about 6 weeks ago CineForm released its RT engine for FCP which now provides multi-stream RT performance in FCP including through transitions and effects. Following is CineForm's Tech Blog post on the subject: http://techblog.cineform.com/?p=2747.

I just reread my last post.... not codecs.... sorry I had a long day that day.

The newest beta of neoHD/Remaster you can enable the FCP preference and not have to render color corrections done in firstlight and still have all transitions/effects play realtime without the need to prerender!

It is such a nice feature! I can't believe more people are not jumping on this

Have you tried the new beta of neoHD? you can use first light and have your color graded files show up in final cut with full support for transitions and codecs without the need to render! SOOOO NICE!

Same thing like Scott said. I'll have to check if the quality is better when skipping the ProRes conversion. As for the grading in color: you might be right, but I don't have the time to colorgrade every shot before editing. And I like my shots to be colorgradable in FCP when editing.

Hmmm...this doesn't seem right to me. Converting codecs TWICE before editing seems really counter-intuitive and open to concatentation errors.

I am curious about whether if you go straight to ProRes but then pull the clips into Color, if you would recover exactly the same amount of detail in the highlights and shadows.

I suspect you would, but can't prove it right now.

@Scott: Interesting point. My conversion goes from the original h264 to Cineform and then to ProRes LT. The point in going back to ProRes is that I get the unlimited RT effects in FCP. When using Cineform I need to render each clip after applying filters.

I'll test and post some cineform-graded vs. cineform-to-prores-graded images when I have time.
